Hey hi hello, Durham,

First, a confession, since someone out there called this newsletter out for being AI. (Hi! I see you. Respect.)

Here's the honest version: I'm a real person with a day job, a family, a laundry pile that wins most weeks, and a soft spot for this region. Every week I'm trying to round up what's happening across eight towns so you don't have to dig through eight event calendars and forty Instagram accounts. Some of that rounding-up I do with AI tools, and some of it I do myself.

I'm skeptical of AI and careful with it. (I work with it in my daily job all the time): I check what goes in here, and the opinions, the picks and the bad jokes are all mine. But I won't pretend I don't use it. It's how one person can do something bigger every week than she could on her own, and I'd rather do that for this community than not do it at all. If you've got thoughts, hit reply. I'm open to the conversation and happy to change my mind, especially if you want to help. 😉

Okay. It's also Thanksgiving weekend, which means one of two things in your house: you're hosting (godspeed, and yes, the turkey needs to come out of the freezer today), or you're a guest who's been told to "just bring something," and you'll overthink it until Saturday night. Either way, at some point someone will say "let's get everyone out of the house for a bit." This issue is for that moment: a fish ladder full of jumping salmon, a pick-your-own farm, a cereal buffet with cartoons, and a Garba night big enough to work off the pie.

Here's what's on.

📍 Local gem: Dance Lounge Whitby (Whitby)

Back in August I gave Dance Lounge Whitby a one-line teaser and promised I'd come back to it. Consider this me coming back to it. It's a salsa studio here in Whitby at the corner of Rossland and Garden, run by Tyler.

Here's what makes it different. When you sign up for private lessons, group classes come included, six nights a week, at no extra cost. Most studios make you choose between expensive one-on-one time and a big group class where nobody notices your feet. Here you get both: the private lesson is where you learn the steps with someone actually watching and correcting, and the group nights are where you practise with real partners until it clicks (and, after a few weeks, with people you'd call friends).

Come with a partner, or without – they have the flexibility to adjust to whatever you want to learn: salsa, bachata, swing, argentine tango, waltz or kizomba. It's a hyper-local business with wonderful people.

💚 Why I love it: the owner is wonderful, and the studio has a lovely community feel. It's the kind of place where you show up for a dance lesson and leave knowing half the room. If "learn to dance" has been on your someday list, this is a very good place to make it now.

🗳️ Election corner (quick one, promise)

Last week's Durham Election Cheat Sheet got a great conversation going, including over on Reddit, where one commenter made a point I haven't stopped thinking about:

"Wanting change and being capable of understanding what drives the tax bill, what council actually controls, what it doesn't control, and where meaningful change can be made are two very different things. A councillor can have all the right intentions and still accomplish very little if they haven't done the homework… The ideas matter, the willingness matters. But so does the knowledge and wherewithal to turn an idea into something council can actually do. Otherwise, we haven't elected a voice for change. We've elected a muted voice."

So when someone at your door says "we need change," it's fair to ask them how. The who-does-what section of the cheat sheet will help you tell a real plan from a wish.

Reader question: if the mayor already sits on both councils, what's the point of a regional councillor? Isn't that redundant?

Fair question, because on paper the two jobs overlap. The difference is weight and workload.

  • Weight: every town gets exactly one mayor. If mayors were the only people at the Regional table, Brock would have the same single vote as Oshawa, a city many times its size. Regional councillors scale each town's voice to its population. Oshawa elects five, Whitby four, Ajax and Pickering three each, Clarington two, and Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge one each. That's 20 regional councillors plus 8 mayors.
  • Workload: the mayor's main job is running your town's council, and in Ajax, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby they also hold strong mayor powers over the local budget. Regional councillors have more room to dig into the Region-run files: water, policing, paramedics, transit, social services and growth.

So it isn't redundant, though it's a lot of overlap for one ballot. When you vote for regional councillor, you're picking your town's voice on the "under your street" stuff.

When you can vote: Oshawa's online voting opens Tue, Oct 13. Ajax (online or phone) and Pickering (online) open Oct 19, Whitby has in-person advance voting Oct 22–25, and Election Day everywhere is Mon, Oct 26. The cheat sheet has every town.
